The concept of barn quilts began with Donna Sue Groves and its desire to honour his mother, Maxine and his inheritance of the Appalachians by the presence of a painted quilt hung on his barn in Adams County, Ohio. As friends has promoted the project, Donna Sue suggested instead that a "sampler" of quilt twenty seats could be created on a trail of conduct which will invite visitors to travel through the countryside. The first quilt square was a Star of Ohio, painted by local artists installed in 2001 on a building in a greenhouse in Manchester, Ohio. With the encouragement of Donna Sue Groves, other quilt trails began in Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky and Iowa. This simple idea gradually extended to 44 States and Canada, and the trail continues to grow. More than 4,000 quilts are part of organized trails; the tens, more are scattered through the countryside waiting to be discovered. Find more information www.barnquiltinfo.com
