PolyU design students win second prize in a national competition with a "smart pill box for adults"

A team of students, Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of design (PolyU design) showed their prowess in creativity and care for the elderly having won second prize in the national innovation competition, which has attracted more than 500 entries from universities across the country.

Organized by 3 m, a global technology company, on the theme "innovation light of life", a competition goal motivating inspiration and creativity of the young generation. The team of four senior students from the MSc in multimedia and entertainment technology program of the PolyU design with innovative design "Smart pill box" enter the final round with 17 other units and finally won the first prize in South China and the second prize of the national competition.

"We create intelligent pill box for senior citizens who suffer from chronic diseases and the need to take medication regularly," Nick Zeng, head of the team, they presented an innovative concept that is heavily derived from the judges. "The tablets box offers three basic functions: pill reminder time, one key called and GPS positioning, which can effectively tackle the elderly problem of poor memory and emergency situations when they are not at home. We have adopted a new kind of user experience and prescribing habits, customized for specific group, based on our research. "

Smart pill box addresses various issues related to the ageing of the population in China. Not only will new innovations strengthen the family relationship with the customers, but also reduce the burden of related ministries. The judges were very impressed by the excellence of this design, in terms of both creativity and practicality.

The final race was held at the R&D Center of the t3M China June 22. PolyU team, formed by Nick Zeng, Huang April, Lulu Chang and Miro Zeng, who has only one score below the champions from Chongqing University, is without doubt, pride and a valuable asset to the school.

AccuQuilt announces its 4th annual competition of Design Quilt barn

OMAHA, Nebraska now in its fourth edition, barn Quilt Design Contest AccuQuilt 2013 is set to be the biggest yet, kick off National Quilting weekend (16-17 March). Quilters of all levels and all disciplines are invited to submit ideas through http://www.accuquilt.com/barnquilt of 14 March - 7 April.

The top 100 models will be selected and posted on accuquilt.com, where finalists will be chosen by the public selection and management AccuQuilt. MIT students win twice in White House competition

For the second year in a row, a team of MIT students — including two this year from the MIT School of Architecture + Planning — have won double awards in the Better Buildings Case Competition conducted at the White House by the U.S. Department of Energy.

In support of President Obama's goal of cutting energy waste from homes and businesses by half over the next two decades, the annual competition invites university energy clubs to propose innovative solutions for increasing the efficiency of buildings across the country.

Drawing together skills and experience in urban planning, real estate, engineering and finance, the contest challenges students to come up with creative solutions to real-world problems faced by specific organizations in the public and private sectors — solutions that can be used as models for other organizations across the marketplace.

The competition also helps launch students' careers in energy by introducing them to potential employers. After competing in last year’s contest, for instance, SA+P’s Elena Alschuler CP ‘12 was hired by the Energy Department’s Building Technologies Office to help develop tools for collecting and analyzing data on building energy performance. She was also responsible for writing the competition’s case studies this year.
