Intel App Innovation Software Contest Challenges Developers to Get Creative



CodeProject has announced its newest contest, the Intel App Innovation Contest (AIC) 2013, with over $100,000 in cash prizes.  The global competition, which ends on November 20, is sponsored by Intel and co-sponsored by Lenovo.  Application developers submit their most innovative Windows 8 tablet and all-in-one desktop app ideas to compete in a three-round challenge to win big and gain recognition in the international developer community.

Round 1: Developers must submit their best Windows 8 Desktop App ideas in one of the following six categories: Education, Entertainment, Finance, Games, Healthcare and Retail.  CodeProject will then select up to 125 finalists who will receive a Lenovo Windows 8 device and move on to Round 2 where they will compete against each other and up to 375 other finalists from international developer communities including India, China, and Russia.

Geocoding Software Now SERP and CASS Certified

•   eLOT – Provides mailers the ability to sort their mailings in approximate carrier-casing sequence


As with SERP, users can run the Loqate report facility to generate the CASS Report and the CASS Summary Report. The CASS Report is used in the CASS certification process and is available to Loqate partners and clients who may be interested in obtaining CASS certification themselves. This report is generated and submitted to the USPS for evaluation during the CASS certification process. The second report: the Postal Service Form 3553 Report (or PS3553 Report) also known as the CASS Summary Report certifies to the post office that a mailing has been processed by CASS certified software. This is required for users who are interested in qualifying for postage discounts.

Los Angeles Design Festival Announces Highlights and Launches New Mobile App for 2013



The Los Angeles Design Festival (www.ladesignfestival.org) (LADF) is proud to announce the line-up of events for 2013. With over 40 events planned throughout the city from June 13 – 30, 2013, the LADF – now in its third year - continues to grow, proving that the City of Angels has embraced its global status as a design capital. Fifth Floor Gallery and California Home and Design magazine will host a closing party for Craft + Design, a special exhibition for the Furniture Society Symposium.

NJIT Students Present Resilient Designs in Long Branch on June 24



Professors and students from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) College of Architecture and Design will present a program on storm resistant design for the Jersey Shore on Monday, June 24, 2013 from 1-4 PM at VFW Post 2140 located at 255 Willow Avenue in Long Branch, NJ. The program is open to design professionals, public leaders, and others interested in storm resistant design. The program is free. The Storm Resilient Design program is sponsored by NJIT and the Mid-Atlantic Precast Association (MAPA). It will feature a number of short presentations, including:


*Student presentations of their designs for hypothetical storm resilient projects for a new ferry terminal at Sandy Hook, NJ and a new emergency operations center in Long Branch, NJ.
*Brief summary of the goals and programs of the new NJIT Center for Resilient Design
*Description of resilient concrete engineering and the work of the NJIT Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program


The students who will be presenting were participants in two spring semester design programs within the NJIT College of Architecture and Design that focused on resilient construction using precast concrete. The studios were jointly sponsored by MAPA and the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute Foundation (PCI Foundation). 35 students participated in two design studios in the second year of this program.


The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) College of Architecture and Design (COAD) is comprised of the nationally known New Jersey School of Architecture and the newly created School of Art + Design. The College brings together under one roof architects, planners, designers, and artists.


Launched in early 2013, the NJIT Center for Resilient Design will provide state and local leaders, business owners ,and residents with actionable 21st Century ready-to-build designs and expertise for disaster recovery from natural and man-made disasters.


The Mid-Atlantic Precast Association (MAPA) is a regional trade organization of eleven architectural and structural precast concrete manufacturers servicing  six Mid-Atlantic states, New York City, and the District of Columbia.


The PCI Foundation is a not-for-profit education and research foundation affiliated with the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI). PCI Foundation funds precast concrete educational studios in architecture and engineering programs around the country. Since 2007, the Foundation has funded 22 studios at six universities.

McCarthy Begins Construction on Grossmont Hospital Heart and Vascular Center in San Diego County



McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. (http://www.mccarthy.com/), one of the nation’s premier healthcare builders, has begun construction of the new 74,000-square-foot Heart and Vascular Center at Grossmont Hospital, located at 5555 Grossmont Center Drive in La Mesa, Calif.

McCarthy was retained by the Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD), with CEO Barry Jantz and the publicly elected GHD board members providing oversight. Sharp HealthCare is the operator of Grossmont Hospital through a 30-year lease that was executed with the District in 1991.


Proposition G, a $247 million bond measure approved by voters of the East County region in June 2006, is funding the project, budgeted at $26,325,383 in construction costs. As proposed in the hospital’s Facilities Master Site Plan, Prop. G is funding several other infrastructure construction improvements at the publicly owned hospital, which opened in 1955.


Designed by KMD Architects, the Grossmont Hospital Heart and Vascular Center will be a cast-in-place, concrete structure with spread footings and a structural steel moment frame, with one level below ground and two levels above. Construction of this facility will allow for expansion of the hospital’s existing surgery department and provide new multipurpose procedural rooms with the flexibility to support a wide range of specialties including general surgery, minimally invasive surgery, image-guided surgery and endovascular interventional procedures.


When completed in March of 2015, the building also will house a pharmacy, laboratory and covered walkway connection to the existing Women’s Center on Level A, as well as a new loading dock and materials management services area on Level B. The new building will allow for the relocation of the hospital’s pharmacy and clinical laboratory space to meet current seismic criteria.


“The new facility is being built on a tight site within a small footprint of the busy hospital campus, presenting access challenges for work crews, material and equipment,” said McCarthy Project Director Jason Mrozek. “We’ll also be creating tie-ins to the existing hospital, which will call for a carefully coordinated and closely managed construction schedule to minimize any disruption to campus operations.”


All told, this project encompasses shoring, foundations, structure and build-out of Levels A and B. Level 1 will be provided as a shell space to accommodate the future build-out of a catheterization lab and operating rooms.


KPFF Consulting Engineers is the structural and civil engineer, Randall Lamb is the electrical and mechanical engineer and Wimmer Yamada and Caughey is the landscape architect. Parsons Corporation is serving as GHD’s program manager.


McCarthy is also in the process of building the new $46 million Central Energy Plant at Grossmont Hospital, construction costs for which are also being financed by Prop. G. The three-story, 18,400-square-foot energy plant will include electrical switchgear, emergency generators, cooling towers, chillers, fuel tanks, medical gas tanks and various mechanical equipment that will help meet future capacity needs of the hospital. The plant also will include a control and locker room for facilities management personnel.


The new energy plant additionally will contain a new state-of-the-art cogeneration combustion turbine generator. The cogeneration equipment is not part of the bond-related construction but will complement the efficiencies of the Central Energy Plant and help save millions of dollars in energy costs while reducing the hospital’s emission of greenhouse gas pollutants by 90 percent.


Construction of the Central Energy Plant began last September, and is scheduled for completion in March of 2015.  In late April of this year, approximately120 concrete trucks delivered the more than 1,120 cubic yards of concrete needed to construct the foundation for the plant.
