History of Itawamba County in New Local Book

The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Itawamba County from local author Mona Robinson Mills. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images and memories of days gone by.

Itawamba County takes its name from Chief Itawamba, a prominent leader of the Chickasaw Indians. Formed in 1836 from ceded Chickasaw Indian lands, the county was settled by hardy, industrious pioneers seeking new opportunities in a new land. The legacy of these hardworking settlers continues with the photographic history portrayed in Images of America: Itawamba County.

Beautiful and immense hardwood forests that provided shelter for its pioneers later became the source of a logging boom, with sawmills and oxen being a familiar sight. Life in Itawamba County was not all work and no play, however. The county has a rich musical heritage: local musician Jordan Cockrell won first place in the World Championship Fiddling Contest held at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis; the “First Lady of Country Music,” Tammy Wynette, and jazz great Jimmie Lunceford, known as the “King of Syncopation,” were both born here; and the roots of the “King of Rock and Roll,” Elvis Presley, go deep in Itawamba County.

Highlights of Itawamba County:
•   The muddy divide
•   Musical heritage
•   Faces from the past
•   Teaching and preaching
•   Sawmills and boom times

Mona Robinson Mills, a sixth-generation Itawambian, is delighted to share this homage to the county of her heritage. A member of the Itawamba County Historical Society, Mona is also a genealogical blogger with a passion for vintage photographs.

Client London Release Vintage Messenger Bag, Remade In Britain

As well as adding new items to the online shop at http://www.clientlondon.com Client London is also joining up with the successful online fashion store the http://independentboutique.com . The launch of the new boutique is hoped to bring in more 'clients' to the brand and increase sales as it appeals to a wider area, offering Client clothes alongside many other independent designers. One of the latest fashion additions to both online stores is the A/W 2012 Client London messenger bag.

On her adventures and in search of vintage finds, Client director, Kate Holmes discovered an eastern block true vintage gas mask bag circa 1970 and decided this would be the bag to launch this autumn/winter. Under the direction of Kate the vintage military durable gas mask bag was remade in to the Client London Messenger Bag complete with the Client Crossed Hands Logo seen throughout the collection.

With a simple design opening like an envelope, this traditional military khaki green bag features the old serial code and name tag on the inside. All the old interior pockets that once housed the gas mask essentials are still included and the bag has been adapted with a Client engraved button to seal the external lid with the Client Crossed Hands logo embroidered in the corner and a long adjustable thick strap. The external pocket now beautifully repurposed for a mobile phone, originally would have been used for a radio or something different.

The origins of the messenger back date back to New York in the 1950s, where it is rumoured that the heavy duty shoulder bags were being manufactured for telephone lines men by Frank Demartini of Globe Canvas. The bag was designed to be easy to access and hold equipment while the men were working on the telephone poles. Later in the 1970s, bicycle messengers started using the canvas bags for deliveries. By the 1980s due to congestion, bicycles and delivery men became more common in Manhattan and a subculture was formed, shops began to spring up creating small messenger- delivery bags for the growing need as well as for fans of the subculture.

The messenger bag appeals to so many because of its durability, longevity and its reminiscence of the Manhattan bicycle subculture. The appeal of the working class heritage and the ability to carry anything are also reasons why this bag has been so popular all over the globe through our recent history.

"While in the races, fans buy new t-shirts and souvenirs of their favorite driver, nothing of such well broken port, vintage t-shirt or hat to show that you are not a beginner. Fans especially as snagging an autograph of driver on a vintage t-shirt commemorating one of their WINS, "laughs Moss. MOSS says that everything racing fans are very interested in drivers which are tear tracks and leading the NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase right now, they are extremely faithful to the icons of the race, as Dale Earnhardt SR. "we know that when we encounter an authentic t-shirt of Dale Earnhardt Sr., someone will love and cherish this t-shirt. But at the present time, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Danica Patrick and Matt Kenseth are best sellers, "she explains.

In addition to vintage NASCAR and Indy driver t-shirts and hats, racing enthusiasts seem to have fierce loyalty to certain securities as well. "They love the t-shirts of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Bristol, Daytona and, of course, Talladega," says Moss. Visitors to the basement Vintage are everywhere in the world and it often say that they go to a certain race and will wear their purchase when it. «Vintage NASCAR and Indy racing t-shirts and hats are hard to get when you live somewhere like the Switzerland», said Moss. "And it can be any also frustrating when you live in a part of the United States as Montana or Oregon to find that everything affecting the race. Races, the NASCAR and Indy fans of living everywhere, and they want to be able to show their allegiance when they participate in a race. They appreciate that they can be sure with us that our t-shirts are authentic and licensed - not counterfeits, "explained Moss.

Brewing Up the History of Greater Pittsburgh

The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Brewing in Greater Pittsburgh from local author Robert A. Musson, MD. Through more than 200 historic images, Brewing in Greater Pittsburgh looks at the most prominent brewers in the Greater Pittsburgh area, covering Allegheny, Beaver, Westmoreland, and other neighboring counties.

Although Pittsburgh is best known for the many steel mills that have dotted its landscape, it has also been a major center for the brewing of beer and ale throughout its history. Since 1765, when common beer was first brewed for British soldiers at Fort Pitt, the city has produced a tremendous amount of beer to quench the thirst of steelworkers who toiled in the city’s mills.

Brands like Iron City, Duquesne (or “Duke”), Rolling Rock, and Stoney’s are still known in the area today, while old-timers might remember names like Fort Pitt, E&O, Carnegie, and Dutch Club, among others. Many towns surrounding Pittsburgh, such as McKeesport, Latrobe, and Aliquippa, were also home to breweries that thrived for many years.

Highlights of Brewing in Greater Pittsburgh:
•   Many images in this book are from the collections of local residents, as well as the Pittsburgh Brewing Company archives, which have not been available to the public until now.
•   The book covers breweries throughout the 250 years of Pittsburgh’s existence, from the 1760s to now.
•   The book shows a wide variety of early labels, cans, and signs used to market beer, as well as early photos of the buildings, people, delivery wagons & trucks, and equipment used for brewing.

A collector of Pennsylvania beer memorabilia since 1976, Robert A. Musson, MD, has researched the history of the brewing industry of Ohio and Pennsylvania for two decades. He is the author of Arcadia Publishing’s Brewing in Cleveland and has self-published numerous books on the brewing industry, such as Fort Pitt, That’s It! and Brewing Beer Since 1829.

Now there will be two floors of the most fabulous vintage fashion you'll find anywhere. for both women and men.

Partner Dave Ireland: 'We're in the throes of dressing the upper floor for opening and completion is imminent, so we thought we'd make the opening date as memorable as possible. We're a small shop in a small town, but we're known far and wide, so the date had to be something special.' While the lower floor has been described by customers as an 'Aladdin's Cave' the upper floor will have the wow factor too. Blood red chandeliers, red rugs, jet black floors and white walls. And a tented ceiling.

Personal photo not cooking stir focusing Pulitzer winner

The Chicago Sun-Times made a shocking announcement last week when fired its entire photo staff. The paper says now will rely on freelance journalists to shoot with mobile phone cameras or whatever equipment they have. Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist John h. White was let go between the nearly 30 full-time photographers. White has spent decades at the Sun-Times. Tell Me More said that the executions have wounded the Sun-Times, but photojournalism's future remains bright.

About the Sun-Times has made the announcement

"We received an email that there would be a meeting, was required and so I thought, ' well maybe we're all going to get new equipment. ' And nobody knew what it was. ... The editor came to 09.30 and made a statement to the point that, as we move towards digital technology and things of this nature, we are eliminating the Department photos — photographers and staff. ' "I think someone said [announcement] was 20 seconds, I don't know. But there was one person who said, ' this is real? She just said that? ' "

Why you don't need to pay for professional photographers in the era of camera phones

"Someone can go around with a camera in your pocket. You could give a camera to an animal. But the photographer, photojournalist captures the soul. You don't just walk into a tragic situation or a situation of sacred and to be the hotshot person because you have a camera in hand. No, it doesn't work that way. Great photographs they take themselves, but the photographers should be there and recognizes him. ... The photojournalist is the person who sees through a different set of eyes: eyes of the heart, the eyes of history. Capture something that is forever. And you know that when you're doing ".

On what does the loss of creative Sun-Times paper

"It's like taking your eyes off the body. My ex-students, there is a team, there is a family. You know, to the Sun-Times, who lost. "We were there because it was a great paper. And Sun-Times won a Pulitzer Prize — the news — just two years ago in 2011. This was before it acquired Sun-Times management. The Sun-Times has always been that light, Lighthouse, symbol of journalism — and the best of journalism. The constant pursuit of excellence. All that photographer, as far as I'm concerned, is to 1 page. And that's the whole idea.

On how photojournalism differs from other professions that have disappeared

"A robot is not going to go and do what we did. Anyone can take a snapshot. ... If someone looks at a photo again, and you look at that, if it is for two seconds or six seconds or a minute, is recorded forever. That doesn't work in all other means ".

Forward movement

"You won't be cursing the darkness. Candles are lit. I live by my three words "F": faith, focus, and flight. I'll be true to life, my purpose in life, my assignment in life. Stay focused on what is really important, what matters ".

On lessons from his father and passing on inspiration

"My father was a great Minister. ... Once he had all of us together, children and everything. It was night, and that was giving us lessons. There was a lightning bug in flight and reached and grabbed one. ... Held in his hand and said: ' what is this lightning bug? ' He said, ' well are doing a light. ' And put it in his jacket and says, ' that's right. It cannot contain his light. Must make that light. And so does the same thing in life. ... Better always pursue the best, search for the best in others and do your best. ' And I live by the motto, ' Good, better, best; never let them rest until your good is better and your better best. ' These are the things that remind my colleagues. There is no hope.

"I love the people. I love older adults and kids love. And to give them a daily dose of, prescription of inspiration — I don't know any other profession where one can enter the hearts and the lives of someone other than the camera. The camera's that universal passport. And I love him ".

Software accelerates groundwater simulations

Leading global companies like Schlumberger Water Services, Aquaveo LLC, DHI Water & Environment, Environmental Simulations Inc., and HydroGeoLogic Inc. exploit Fraunhofer SCAI's linear solver library SAMG (Algebraic Multigrid Methods for Systems) for the acceleration of their groundwater simulation software. Groundwater models are the basis for computer simulations for a range of industrial and environmental research themes, such as analyses of pump testing, the diffusion of toxic elements, and the prediction of changes in groundwater levels. The computationally most intensive process during a groundwater simulation is the solution of the extremely large linear systems of equations.

By using the industry-leading library SAMG, computing times can be reduced enormously. SCAI's software allows the user to increase modeling accuracy and at the same time keep compute times manageable. Furthermore, SAMG handles strongly heterogeneous systems like hydraulic conductivity systems where standard solvers fail. SAMG is available for use with the MODFLOW-software from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and visitors to the MODFLOW & More conference to be held in Golden, Colorado in the first week of June will have a chance to find out more about the software.

SAMG is a library of subroutines for the highly efficient solution of large, sparse linear systems of equations. Such systems of equations form the numerical kernel of most simulation software packages. Usually, the numerical solution of these linear systems of equations needs most of the computational time of the whole simulation. SAMG supports both serial and multi-core computations on single PC, workstation or compute nodes.

The work of Fraunhofer SCAI is dedicated to partners and customers involved in software development and applications. In addition to the solver technology, SCAI offers analysis and advice on application problems as well as tailoring of the software to the customers' computer systems, in particular for parallel computers.

Midcentury Furniture + Grandkid Nostalgia = Modern Trend

Open a design magazine or turn on a home decorating show these days, and it's clear: Midcentury modern is hot. It first showed up in the 1950s and '60s — think low-slung sofas, egg-shaped chairs and the set of Mad Men. My first midcentury modern find was a dining set I bought on Craigslist for $75. There was something about the clean lines and gentle curves of the wooden chairs that got me. I saw the name Drexel Declaration stamped under the table, Googled it and found a world of people in love with 60-year-old furniture.

"It's blazing hot. It really is," says Eddy Whitely, a midcentury modern furniture dealer in Baltimore. "People that are into it are into it." So who are those people? Let's start with who they aren't: baby boomers. According to Stacey Greer, Whitely's business partner, "They just don't want to look at it anymore, they want something different. They grew up with it and their parents had bought it, so they want anything but that. It's definitely more of a younger, urban look."

'People Tend To Like What Their Grandparents Liked'

Martina Alhbrandt loves finding and fixing up vintage pieces, things her parents would call dated or tacky. She's drawn to the simplicity of midcentury design. (She even keeps a blog called My Mid-Century Modern Life.) She describes the style as "clean and functional" and says it reminds her of the values of her grandparents' generation.

"My grandparents were very frugal," Alhbrandt says. "They worked hard and they bought things with cash. And if something were to break, like the drawer of a dresser were to break, they would fix it. They wouldn't just throw it away and go to Wal-Mart and buy a new one." According to Bobbye Tigerman, a curator of design at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, nostalgia is a big part of what's driving the trend. "People tend to like what their grandparents liked and reject the taste of their parents," she says.

That same thing happened with art deco a generation earlier. "In the late 1960s, art deco became very popular," Tigerman says. "And the term was actually coined in the '60s; it was not a term used in the 1920s." Similarly, back in the '50s, no one was talking about "midcentury modern" — not even the people who were there creating it.

Plenty Of Midcentury Supply

I tracked down Stewart MacDougall and Kipp Stewart, who designed my dining set. They're both well into their 80s and living in California. I was curious to know what they think of today's midcentury modern craze. It turns out, MacDougall has also been shopping. He's been visiting a site called 1stdibs because it sometimes lists his designs. He says he's bought a few pieces just for fun, but he's not sure why other people would want them. Finally, he settles on this explanation: "I think there is a huge market for nicely designed things."

When I tell Stewart, his design partner, that I see Drexel Declaration all over design blogs and in magazines, Stewart looks at me puzzled. "Really?" he asks. "Maybe because there's so much of it. It's just available." Stewart may be onto something: After World War II, home ownership surged. People who bought homes in the 1950s and '60s would now be in their 70s and 80s. Many no longer want or need houses full of furniture.

Whitely, the Baltimore dealer, says it hits him when he's driving through neighborhoods. "I just look at block after block after block of houses. There's a sofa in every single one of them; there are dining room chairs. So think about it, just the sheer numbers of furniture." That means there are still plenty of chances to find the perfect midcentury modern piece — and, if you're lucky, at the perfect price.

The Story Behind the Credits for ’20 Feet From Stardom’

For the opening credits of “20 Feet From Stardom,” the director Morgan Neville was looking for a playful way to put backup singers, the subjects of the documentary, into the spotlight. He found inspiration in vintage album covers and photographs, but also more surprisingly in the work of the artist John Baldessari. In a homage to Mr. Baldessari’s well-known images of people with dots covering their faces, dots were applied to lead singers to emphasize the performers behind them.

Mr. Neville developed the idea with one of his producers, Gil Friesen, and the music executive Jeff Ayeroff, who came up with the idea of referencing the artist. Initially, Mr. Friesen thought the concept might be too clever for a credit sequence, Mr. Neville recalled, but the director gave it a try anyway. “I printed out some pictures, took some stickers, put them on the faces of lead singers, scanned them back into the computer and did a quick temp version of what it would look like,” Mr. Neville said in a phone interview. “I surprised Gil with it and he loved it.”

The graphic designer Scott Grossman, working with Mr. Neville, built the sequence using, along with the dot-covered faces, album covers featuring the subjects of the movie, all set to the Lou Reed song that calls out his backup singers, “Walk on the Wild Side.” “One thing that Gil and I had bonded over when we started making this film was our love of modern art,” Mr. Neville said. “This was a great, subversive way to get a passion of ours into the movie.” Besides, Mr. Neville said, the sequence makes an important point: “It’s about retraining your eye as much as the film is also about retraining your ear.”

Online Sales auctions some of the most vintage and rare rock and roll memorabilia ever found.

Twin Cities auction house ONLINE SALES announces their upcoming auction of vintage rock memorabilia, capped off by a rare, signed Beatles document that’s expected to bid well into the thousands!  Think "American Pickers," "Rock and Roll," and add a dash of "dreams really do come true" and you'll be set for this auction. Recently added, is a collection of vintage rock posters that may have been missed -- if not for a quick encounter between auction house owner Paul "Pash" Pashibin, and a delivery woman.

"I had been on an all-day excursion," Pash relates. "I was browsing through my last stop, in the basement of an antique shop, with a handful of old One-sheets. These are old movie posters that are machine folded, and stamped on the back with a number. The number is commonly mistaken by novice collectors as a limited edition, numbered poster. The poster numbering scheme actually works like this:  The first two numbers are the year that the movie came out, and the second set of numbers is the number of movies published by that studio that year. So a poster with 69/112 would be the 112th movie published by that studio, in the year 1969.

I had a few of these older One-sheets in my arms. I was unhappy with my findings that day, and I was crouched down looking through the last boxes, getting ready to leave. Just then a delivery woman came into this back room. She had a dolly loaded with boxes of books. She needed to get past me so she could drop the books in their receiving area. I really had no room, so I contorted my body so she could get past."

And that's when my eyes lit up. By moving to let the delivery go by, there were a set of tubes sticking out of an older book shelf - poster tubes, deeply tucked away.  From Family Dog, to Easy Rider, to Jefferson Airplane and Zappa, I uncovered an amazing treasure. Pash and ONLINE SALES bring MANY of these uncovered posters to auction this January 26th. The majority are in mint condition, as perfect as the day they were silkscreened.

Included in the auction are many Pandora Productions hippy / psychedelic posters from the 1960's, including PIPEDREAM and LOVE IS A FLOWER.  These posters defined the age of Aquarius and the summer of love, and are in amazing condition for being 46 years old. Many other rare and vintage posters and ephemera including children's book plates, movie posters for musicals, original 1977 Star Wars memorabilia, and M.C. Escher prints will go on the block.  The auction is topped of by two very rare and unique items.  The first is an actual brick from the Cavern Club, where the Beatles first performed in Liverpool.  Finally, all four Beatles signed the back cover of a 1964 Beatle Bulletin - and this rare opportunity to own rock and roll history is available to the top bidder.

Shoes, romanticism and art: a reader of walking with books he loves

Longtime readers know that one of my favorite blogs of pop culture ever invented is Smart Bitches Trashy Books, offering a home for readers of romance (they are legion) both love their books and laugh at their books. Is a community of enthusiasts, that is because his boss Sarah Wendell, was the natural ally of a graduate student named Rudi, who did an art project that Sarah has immediately given a simple, evocative title when viewing on its website: "The most awesome shoes in the universe".

They are the heels, decoupaged with small copies of real romance novels, with pink trim at the Sun. And not for display — are to be worn. At first glance, the shoes look just like the most explosive darling display of fantasy that you will ever see in your life, and who, I am sure. Are made with great care and love, you can say, and while decoupage shoes are a fairly common craft project (try an image search for "decoupage shoes"), these are something special.

And what really caught my attention was "education" by Rudi, who complains that readers of the novel are judged so often literally from the covers of their books. Rudi says, "to take an object that maintains a tradition of femininity and sexuality and covering it in images from romance covers that I created a job that allowed me to perform and celebrate my love of romance novels wherever I went in an act of subversion.

There is a special charm to these, for me, because women's fiction has become so linked in pictures of shoes — many of these covers are more traditional romance, but more contemporary romantic (and other fiction marketed for women) is absolutely crawling with covers that prominently feature shoes. To mash up shoes and romance fiction is particularly pointed and big and delicious.

These shoes are cute, but they are not only cute, but I'm also a defiant display enthusiasm, pride of kind-kind reader, good humor and an incredibly distinctive fashion sense, because come on, those are big shoes.

Should Art Sale Help Save Detroit?

Host Michel Martin and editor Ammad Omar crack open the listener mailbox for backtalk. This week, they talk about a controversy surrounding the possible sale of fine art in Detroit to settle the city's debts.

MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:

And now it's time for BackTalk. That's where we hear from you. Editor Ammad Omar is with me once again. What's going on today, Ammad?

AMMAD OMAR, BYLINE: Hey Michel. Earlier this week we talked about Detroit and there's word there that the city might have to sell off artwork at the famed Detroit Institute of Art because Detroit is almost $16 billion in debt and facing possible bankruptcy. Well, that got the letters coming in from coast to coast, Michel. Cleo Dyer from New York City writes in, I strongly believe that Detroit should sell anything it can to help the city, masterpieces and even land owned by the state are fair game. Collectors and museums would pay millions and the city would benefit.

MARTIN: Listener Jonathon Polan(ph) lives on the other coast. He's in Seattle now but he says he lived in Michigan until he was 18 and he says, quote "I grew up in Detroit and I'm not talking about the suburbs. The DIA is one of a handful of bright spots in the city. One of the few positive memories I have of Detroit is the DIA. If the city were a body, the DIA might be its heart."

And he goes on to say that the residents of Detroit have a history of making terrible leadership decisions and if they think that selling off the DIA is going to save them, they're making yet another one. Thanks Jonathon and Cleo.

OMAR: Well Michelle, I caught up with Michigan Senate majority leader, Randy Richardville. He's a Republican from the southern suburbs of Detroit and he agrees with people like Jonathan who says the DIA is part of the region's identity. Richardville introduced a bill this week that would require Michigan museums to follow the American Alliance of Museums ethics code that would prohibit them from selling artwork for any reason other than raising money to buy other art or to take care of existing collections.

Here's what Richardville says about his idea.

STATE SENATOR RANDY RICHARDVILLE: People are coming up and saying that they like the idea of preserving this art, they like the idea of protecting these iconic ascots that help define the City of Detroit. Now some people question whether or not the state law like this would supersede a federal bankruptcy court and, you know, that's kind of a David versus Goliath situation. But I'm a believer in state's rights and I would remind people though that David did win when he went up against Goliath.

OMAR: Michel, what he's talking about there is this argument that the city might not have a choice in the matter, that these are city-owned assets and creditors could demand that they be sold. Either way, Michigan's treasurer, Andy Dillon has been quoted as saying, "We'll probably know more details about Detroit's plan on how to get out of this $16 billion debt in the next month or so."

MARTIN: Thanks so much.

OMAR: Thank you.

MARTIN: And remember, at TELL ME MORE, the conversation never ends. To tell us more, you can visit us online at NPR.org/tellmemore. Please remember to leave us your name. We're also on Twitter. Just look for #tellmemorenpr.
