Overland Park story, told through photographs

The newest addition to popular series of Images of America Arcadia Publishing is Overland Park author local kika SoldanEls Oberg and the Overland Park Historical Society. The book offers more than 200 pictures vintage and memories of bygone days.

In 1906, contractor and Builder of railway of New York William B. Strang Jr. has started a unique development of suburban housing seven miles southwest of Kansas City, which he named Overland Park. He chose agricultural land on a high ridge where the Santa Fe, Oregon and California trails once Cross and built railway toll for the use of future users and real estate clients.

Announced seductions, like a lake with camping weekly leisure facilities, attracted thousands of runners on its line of Strang to the new community. In 1909, he organized the first plane flight zone that surprises and seduces the metropolitan population. He built the first private aerodrome in the Midwest, where he held the spectacular air shows and extravaganzas like Buffalo Bill's Wild West.

Overland Park has since become the second largest city in Kansas. The highly rated school system has graduated many notable and recognizable figures like Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis and former president US headquarters joint general Richard Myers.

Author Joyce M. Shaw lives and works in Ocean Springs; in fact, the roots of his family in the region start by his grandfather, Hobart Doane Shaw, who settled on the coast of Gulf of Mississippi in the early 1900s and designed the dike that protects the Harrison County. Joyce is the head of the Gunter Library at the research laboratory for the coast of the Gulf (LRAG).

Author Betty Hancock Shaw is a native resident of Gulfport, Mississippi. She became very interested by the historic preservation after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. It is a founding member and President of the historical society of Gulfport, and its preservation efforts have been recognized by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

Fort Smith's story, told through postcards

The newest addition to the series history of the postcard from Arcadia Publishing is Fort Smith local author Kevin L. Jones. The book offers more than 200 vintage and memorabilia from the postcard of old pictures.

History is alive in Fort Smith. Many unique events has occurred along the Avenue of historic garrison and near the areas from 1817 to the present day. The U.S. military influence from 1817 and prison ' Hell on the Border "judge Isaac C. Parker, for the many businesses along the Avenue since the 19th century, this story of postcard of Fort Smith connects the past and present.

In addition, it shows the history of urban sprawl, local churches, hospitals, and cultural centres throughout Fort Smith. The city serves as a military training ground, crossroads of inland waterway transport, a hub of rail activity and of highways and as a catalyst for economic growth. Fort Smith celebrates its past as it looks to the future.

• Post cards in the book were provided by private collectors, libraries and historical museums.
• Many of the buildings shown in these images were destroyed by natural disasters, fires, or lost time.

Kevin L. Jones, PhD, a native of Nixa, Missouri, received a Bachelor's degree in education, a master's degree from Missouri State University and a Ph.d. from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Dr. Jones is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Arkansas, Fort Smith.

Although many residents appreciate its proximity to the city of New York, Marlborough remained a predominantly rural community. Residents of Marlborough who like their history, small businesses, schools, religion, farms and beautiful surroundings.

In Marlborough, readers discover the city that served as an inspiration for Alfred H. Maurer and George Inness, members of the mid-19th-century Hudson River School of Art and was called back by the famous typographer Frederic Goudy from 1924 until his death in 1947. Just past views of Marlborough who were chosen primarily in the archives of the Marlboro free library to better tell the story of this beloved city.

Emily Amodeo and Joanne Sagarese Pagnotta are researchers of local history for the Marlboro free library. Emily received her Bachelor of arts in English from Mount Saint Mary College. Joanne received the degree of his partner of SUNY Alfred. James B. Cosgrove, Director of the free library of Marlboro, received his Bachelor of arts at the University of Hartford and his master's degree in library science at SUNY Albany.
